Seville is a city full of surprises. The capital of Andalusia offers a great deal of things to see and places to visit around its narrow streets, green gardens, big squares and beautiful monuments. There are a bunch of activities at your reach in almost every neighborhood! In fact… you probably didn’t even know that there are so many free things to do in Seville!
What? Are you surprised? You shouldn’t be! We already talked to you about some interesting things to do in Seville during the summer, remember? Well, now we wrote this new list in case you want to enjoy some extra activities… without spending a single cent! Curious about them? Take a look!
Enjoy a nice free flamenco show!
Almost every tourist that comes to Seville wants to see some flamenco. There are a lot of places to do this all over the city: some of them are very fancy, others are more discrete; some are hosted by a local institution, others are private; and some are better than others, of course. But… a free flamenco show in Seville? Is that possible? Yes, it is! And we know some good places for that.
The first and maybe the most popular one is La Carbonería, a very cool bar by Levíes Street where you can see a flamenco show for free several days a week around 10:00 or 10:30 pm. If you go on the weekends, you will find the place crowded and it will be almost impossible to get a seat. We recommend that you go Wednesday or Thursday night, when it’s not as full as on Friday and Saturday. Oh, and by the way, while you are enjoying your free flamenco show, order a big jar of Agua de Sevilla. This is not free, obviously, but it’s an original and sweet drink you should try!
But La Carbonería is not the only place you can go to enjoy a flamenco show for free in Seville. If you are around Triana, you should definitely go to Betis Street, by the Guadalquivir River (where you can also do some nice activities), and get a spot at T de Triana. Shows usually start at 10:00 pm on Thursdays and Fridays, but make sure you always take a look at their Facebook page, where they announce them in advance.
Visit some city museums and monuments
Seville has a lot of places to visit and, of course, some of them are its awesome monuments and museums. These ones, particularly, are very impressive not only because of what you can find inside, but also because the buildings they are in are magnificent. But… did you know you can get into many of them without paying? Yes! You can see some of the most interesting places in Seville for free!
A perfect example of this is the Real Alcázar, which usually costs € 9.50. “Sevillanos” and people permanently living in Seville can get in without paying a single cent. They are lucky! But if you go on Monday afternoons… it’s free entrance for everybody! So take advantage of this if you are planning on visiting this incredible palace and its gardens 😉
There are other impressive museums and monuments that are always free to visit. For example the old Real Fábrica de Tabacos (Tobacco Factory), which is currently home to the University of Seville, is one of them. Another example? The City Hall of Seville, which even includes a guide who explains everything about this emblematic building. More? The Archivo General de Indias (General Archive of the Indies), which usually hosts different expositions about the relationship between Spain and America…
Practice Spanish with natives
Are you one of those people who loves meeting natives from the countries and cities you are visiting during your trip? Do you try to learn a little bit of their language, too? Well, you can do both things for free in Seville attending the numerous language exchange meetings you will find in different places in the city.
One of the most popular ones is organized by Ingenius, a group of members from the University of Seville who constantly organizes activities like these language exchanges, that usually take place at a bar. There are no requirements to attend them, you don’t need to be a student and, as we told you, it’s one of the many free things you can do in Seville! The only thing you need to attend these “intercambios” is to be ready to meet other people and speak some Spanglish! 😉
Visit some amazing urban vegetable gardens
Seville has some amazing parks that are worth your visit. Parque de María Luisa, Los Príncipes or El Alamillo are probably the most popular in the city, and people usually go there for a walk, to have a picnic, enjoy the sun or celebrate a birthday or a bachelorette party. Even though these are the most popular ones, we recommend that you try the Parque de Miraflores, where you will find not only a beautiful park, but also one of the biggest urban vegetable gardens in Spain.
Visiting these gardens is free and very cool. They are maintained by the neighbors who live nearby and who are not necessarily professional gardeners or farmers, so it’s amazing to see what they have done helping each other. You will have the chance to see some cute vegetable patches where you will find tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, lemons…
Miraflores is a big park, so you will enjoy a nice walk around the urban vegetable gardens and outside their area. It’s a perfect place to go jogging too, and it even has an outdoor gym with different equipment if you want to exercise. Everything for free!
Go to the street market of “Los gitanos” or “El jueves”
Do you like going shopping? Have you ever been to a street market in Spain? When you are in Seville, if it’s Thursday or Sunday, you definitely have to try “El jueves” (The Thursday) or “Los gitanos” (The Gypsies) markets, as they are popularly known, because they won’t leave you indifferent.
“El jueves” is probably the most famous flea market in Seville. It is held every Thursday morning and it takes place on Feria Street, very close to the Alameda de Hércules. It’s totally worth it to go around the street that day and see all kinds of things, from clothes to toys, antiques, or simply junk, who people buy or exchange. It’s different and somehow, charismatic.
“Los gitanos” takes places every Sunday morning by Taiwán Street, in the Alcosa neighborhood, where a place which is empty for the rest of the week takes form and gets transformed into a huge street market. Here you will find tons of clothes and fabric for a very cheap price, fresh fruits and vegetables, lots of different kinds of olives and much more!
As any other street market, it is absolutely free to go to these. How much money you spend during your visit there is another question! Anyway, taking into consideration that both of them are very cheap, it won’t be much 😉
Do you like these free things to do in Seville? We are sure you will enjoy all of them!
