April time in Seville is famous for many things: the beginning of a warmer weather, the blossom of orange trees, the smell of “azahar” around the streets… but above all things there is an event that eclipses everything: the Feria de Abril! This Seville fair has the privilege of being the most important flamenco fair of Spain.
From the last 30 years, the April Fair has turned from a local party into an international event visited by thousands of travelers every year. During this Seville Fair you can find a wide range of activities in order to have fun, like dancing “sevillanas” (the typical flamenco dance from Seville), drinking on a “caseta”, riding a horse… But you might make a mess trying to find all these things among many people, so in Photo Tour Seville we have made a list that will help you to take advantage of this amazing fair during your visit. Check them out!
Avoid the car during the Feria
If you come to Seville by car, we highly recommend you not to bring it to the fair´s zone. During the week of the fair moving by car can turn into a tough task due to the high amount of people that want to access to it. Also, it is very difficult to park so… forget the car!
The best options to go to the fair of Seville are by walking, by Tussam local buses (there is a special bus for the Feria de Abril) or by renting Sevici bicycles. This way you will get to the fair at time, without worrying about parking and by an ecological way!
Do not meet at the fair’s “Portada”
A classic place to meet for many people during the Feria de Abril is the main entrance of the fair, which is called “la Portada”. Well… bad idea!! Meeting at this huge gate would be easy… if everybody didn’t think the same! As a result, this place is one of the most crowded spots of the fair, so it becomes almost impossible to find anybody here.
To solve this problem and meet your friends at the Feria, better try to find a less crowded place. For example, you can go to a specific “caseta”, or to one of the attractions of the fair. Or you can even meet your people at the Delicias Bridge o the Remedios Bridge, which are very close to the Feria de Abril.
Try the “rebujito”: the popular drink at the Seville April Fair
Going to the Feria de Abril means partying, dancing, singing and… drinking! At the Seville Fair you will find different sorts of drinks, but there is one that is the king of the party and you should not leave without trying it: it’s called “rebujito”!
This drink with a funny name is made by mixing Manzanilla (white wine) and a soft drink (Sprite or Seven7), and it is served in a jar with ice. The “rebujito” is tasty and easy to drink, especially when temperatures are hot in Seville. So be careful! Because even if you think it is soft, you could easily get drunk with it and start to dance “sevillanas” like you never did! You will rapidly understand why this drink is the favorite of every “sevillano”! 😉
Visit the “Calle del Infierno” (Hell’s Street) of the fair
We know… this place has a creepy name, but don’t be afraid! It is just the area that accommodates the theme park with all the rides of the Seville April Fair. Here you can find a wide range of fun attractions that will make you feel like a child in wonderland!
Among the rides, we recommend you to get on the Ferris wheel, known as the “noria”, and contemplate the stunning views of Seville and the Feria from the top. You will be amazed and have the opportunity to take beautiful pictures! Also, if you plan to visit this “Calle del Infierno” try to do it at daylight and avoid the night, otherwise you will have to be aware of pickpockets.
Get into public “casetas”
The main attractive activity of the Seville April Fair is its “casetas”. These booths are where all friends meet in order to drink, dance and party. Most of them are private, so if you are not going with a member you won’t be able to get in. This is something irritating for many visitors of the Feria who expect to get inside without knowing it…
If you are lucky enough to know someone in the city, you will probably be gently invited to go. But if you don´t, try some of the public “casetas” that are open to everybody. There are some of them located in different spots of the fair. Here you have a list of them in order to enjoy the Feria de Abril as good as locals!
We hope that our advices help you to enjoy the amazing Seville April Fair!
